Greece has made great progress, Merkel says

German Chancellor Angela Merkel arrived in Athens shortly before 17:30 on Thursday. At around 18:00, the German leader met with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras at the Maximos Mansion. Their meeting will be followed by talks between Greek and German delegations and joint statements made by Tsipras and Merkel to the press.

Greece has made great progress with the completion of its third adjustment programme last year and this should be a motive for the future, Merkel said in an exclusive statement to ‘Kathimerini’ newspaper on Thursday.

She acknowledged that “the past few years have been very difficult for many people in Greece.”

She noted that Europe has displayed solidarity to Greece with three support programmes while backing its efforts to achieve fiscal and economic stability.

Merkel added that Germany remained committed to supporting these efforts.
