The Communist Party of Greece (KKE) on Tuesday tabled an amendment in parliament that would reverse the abolition of widows’ pensions, attached to the labour ministry bill on undeclared labour. The amendment seeks to abolish article 12 of the Katrougalos pension reform law.
KKE said the specific article created massive problems, especially for young widows aged under 55 years old, who only qualify for a reduced pension for just three years, while those under 52 years old forfeit any right to their spouse’s pension, even after they reach 67.
In another amendment, attached to a bill on local authority issues, the party has also proposed giving municipalities the power to write off the debts of poor households, based on income criteria. Under the current system, it notes, municipalities are forced to proceed with electronic auctions of property assets for debts as low as 500 euros.
