Today is a historic day, Tzanakopoulos says

“Today is a historic day,” government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Friday in an interview on the occasion of the ratification of the Prespes Agreement.

Tzanakopoulos also accused main opposition New Democracy (ND) of having shifted to extreme positions and attacked the Movement of Change (KINAL) and the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) parties for their stance.

The Prespes Agreement, a catalyst for starting a dialogue between parties

With regard to the political links developed in the Greek Parliament in favor of the Prespes Agreement, he reiterated that the Agreement served as a catalyst to initiate a dialogue between SYRIZA and the political forces of the centre-left while pointing out that there are still many issues that need to be addressed and relate to society.

Four years later, Greece is a completely different country

In a first review of SYRIZA’s four-year government, the government spokesman noted that “we are in a completely different country. In January 2015, we were called upon to deal with some difficult agreements, extreme austerity measures, and debt servicing without the official sector. The third fiscal adjustment programme was implemented, as well as government measures to keep society intact.” He also referred to the bill on the humanitarian crisis, social solidarity income and a number of other issues.

Tzanakopoulos stressed that Greece had now exited the programme and that the government will pick up the pace for social and economic reconstruction. He also reiterated that the goverment’s focus is on workers.

“According to ELSTAT’s latest data, household disposable income increased by 5 pct,” Tzanakopoulos said, pointing to growth rates, economic confidence and exports. “What matters is social indicators,” he added.
