Costas Gavroglou meets with representatives of the clergy

Education and Religions Minister Costas Gavroglou on Tuesday reassured the respresentatives of the Holy Association of Greek Clergymen and representatives of the Church of Crete that their labour rights are not at risk during a meeting at the ministry on Tuesday.

This meeting concluded the first round of deliberations between the minister and representatives of the Church while a follow-up meeting is going to be held on December 21 to discuss a new text that will be drafted.

“The clergymen expressed their concerns and asked many questions about an agreement that has not been fully understood,” said Gavroglou after the end of the meeting. “On the basis of all that we recorded, we will proceed to rationalise relations between the Church and the State,” he added.

On their part, the clergy underlined their wish to continue to be paid by the state and not through a special fund subsidised by the State and managed by the Church. However, they are adopting a wait-and-see position ahead of the new text and the meeting scheduled for December 21.
