Prosecutors to investigate whether leak on foreign ministry secret funds violates state secrets

The head of the first-instance court public prosecutors’ department Vangelis Ioannidis on Friday ordered an investigation into the leaking of information to the press about the spending of the foreign minstry’s secret funds, to determine whether the offence of violating state secrets has been committed.

Ioannidis ordered an urgent investigation to be carried out by State Security police following the publication of the allegedly leaked material in a news website, apparently from the classified information sent to Parliament for the purpose of audits on how these funds are spent.

The publication of the information was condemned by the prime minister’s press office and Parliament President Nikos Voutsis as harmful to national interests, while casting its authenticity into question.
