ND tables amendment to null pension reductions expected as of January 1

New Democracy tabled an amendment in parliament on Monday to abolish further pension reductions to begin as of January 1, 2019, and called on the government to vote for it.

In its explanatory note, the main opposition party said that the pension cuts were not part of the “third and useless memorandum” with Greece’s creditors passed in 2015, “but were incorporated later and are the price paid for the delays and incompetence of the SYRIZA-ANEL government coalition.”

The reductions in main and supplementary pensions that will get activated in 2019, it said, “are not necessary” and noted that it had voted them down in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
