Higher education can mollify nationalist and populist expressions that increased social and economic inequality creates, Deputy Foreign Minister Yiannis Amanatidis said on Thursday in Lisbon.
Attending the one-day “International Conference on Higher Education in Emergencies” in Lisbon, Amanatidis explained Greece’s efforts to help refugee children integrate in the Greek educational system at all levels, and their equal treatment.
The conference was organized by the Global Platform for Syrian Students and the Portuguese Foreign Ministry, with the motto “Doing More, Better and Faster”. Global Platform was founded in 2013 by former president of Portugal Jorge Sampaio to provide access to higher education in safe haven countries throughout the world to Syrian students affected by the war, and enable them to acquire professional qualifications.
The conference brought together governments, agencies and universities, among others, to share experiences and collaborate.
