IMF’s participation in Greek programme conditioned by the need for reforms and reduction of debt

The International Monetary Fund‘s (IMF) involvement in Greece’s programme includes two conditions, reforms and the debt, spokesman Gerry Rice said in Washington, DC on Thursday.

During a regular press briefing, Rice said the only thing he could add was that the technical work and talks on Greece’s debt had picked up pace and that the IMF is working with its partners towards a credible debt reduction.

Speaking of the organisation’s relations with Europe, he said they were excellent, and declined to comment on criticism of the Greek programme by some European officials.

Asked to comment on pressure for the introduction of a lower tax-exemption ceiling sooner (in 2019), Rice replied that there is no specific deadline, but the issue was part of the general framework and that discussion of Greece’s fiscal policy for 2019 would take place between Greece and European authorities within the next few months.
