The 20th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival

On Friday, the curtain rose for the 20th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival, which includes 180 feature-length and 48 short documentaries which, according to the Festival’s artistic director, Orestis Andreadakis, have a “fighting, pioneering, and entertaining character…talking about our global community, politics, identity , memory, the environment, human rights, but also food, music, cinema, the arts, love -life itself”.

The festival’ tribute to Aies Varda, the legendary Greek-born French director who changed the way we see cinema, is of particular note, highlighting 10 watershed moments in her career. Also noteworthy is the tribute “’68s beyond ’68,” as this year marks exactly half a century since 1968, the year that bore revolutions, conflicts, dreams, disappointments and hopes. The festival returns to that crucial year and reveals little-known rebellions around the world, through seven stunning documentaries, produced from 1968 to 2017.

The festival concludes on Sunday, March 11, with the closing ceremony and the award ceremony at Olympion.
