‘Summit ideal setting for uniting our ideas and strengths’, says Anastasiades

The well-established practice of convening the Southern EU Countries Summits provides a unique and ideal setting for uniting our best ideas and strengths and in this way enables us to make a substantial contribution to the formation and advancement of innovative, comprehensive and sound European solutions and policies, President Nicos Anastasiades said in a message about the summit to be hosted in Nicosia next week.

“I look forward to welcoming you all in Cyprus on January 29, for the 5th Southern EU Countries Summit, where together with my colleagues from France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Portugal and Malta, we will have the opportunity to continue our deliberations and exchange of views on the most pressing issues on our European agenda,” Anastasiades said.

“I sincerely believe that our well-established practice of convening such Summits provides a unique and ideal setting for uniting our best ideas and strengths and in this way enables us to make a substantial contribution to the formation and advancement of innovative, comprehensive and sound European solutions and policies,” he added.

Subjects on the agenda include will discuss migration, Brexit, eurozone reform, Europe’s energy security, climate changes and the 2021-2027 EU Multiannual Financial Framework.

Ahead of the summit, President Nicos Anastasiades will hold bilateral meetings with the prime minister of Portugal Antonio Costa – who is arriving on January 28 for an official visit to Cyprus – and with French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.
