Cypriot FM Christodoulides meets with Netanyahu to discuss regional developments

On Thursday, Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem in order to discuss regional developments and ways of strengthening their bilateral ties, particularly in the sectors of energy and emergency situations.

The meeting was held ahead of the coming trilateral summit between Greece, Cyprus and Israel, which is scheduled to be held on May in Nicosia. In this context,  the two sides reiterated their commitment to the strategic importance of Cyprus-Israel synergy and its comparative advantage to further expand regional cooperation in the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean, to address common challenges and asymmetric threats, such as and achieving common goals.

During his official visit, Christodoulides was also received by the President of Israel, Reuven Rivlin.

According to an announcement issued by the Cypriot Foreign Ministry, Christodoulides also briefed Netanyahu on Turkey‘s actions in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus and noted that Ankara’s conduct was aimed at creating obstacles to plans for broader energy cooperation among countries in the eastern Mediterranean.

With regards to the energy sector,  the two sides discussed the proposed EastMed pipeline, seen as a project of strategic cooperation between the neighbouring nations.

Following the meeting, the Israeil Foreign Ministry in a tweet stated:  “We respect the rights of Cyprus in its various maritime zones and believe that the signing of our bilateral agreement with Cyprus on the delimitation of the EEZ already in the year 2010 speaks for itself.”

Christodoulides is bound to return to Cyprus on Friday.
