Greek mezzo-soprano Betty Harlafti will participate at the Belgian concert Canto General Mars 2019. Canto General, the renowned poem of Pablo Neruda was set to music in a marvellous oratorio composed by Mikis Theodorakis. Canto General will be performed by the Greek mezzo-soprano in the heart of Brussels, the so-called ‘voice of Mikis Theodorakis from the younger generation’. The concert event will be hosted as part of the celebrations commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights.
Mrs. Harlafti will perform on stage with baritone Kris Belligh and actors Assumpta Serna and Marco Fabbri, while Maestro Laendi will lead the renowned La Badinerie choir and orchestra. Mrs. Harlafti is a Modern Greek opera singer with a diverse repertoire and has performed in the best orchestras of the world. In December 2018, the mezzo-soprano released an album produced under the auspices of the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation (ERT) and recorded by the Greek National Radio Orchestra. The album is entitled Betty Harlafti in the World of Mikis Theodorakis. World renowned artists have participated in the album’s composition, such as Maria Farantouri. The album represents a tribute to World Peace.
Canto General embodies one of the leading masterpieces set to music by Mikis Theodorakis. The Chilean poet Pablo Neruda assimilated 231 poems into a single collection, to narrate the history of Latin American states from an indigenous viewpoint.
