A significant donation was given by the AHEPA organisation in the U.S. to a research hospital for children disease last week. The special fund of AHEPA, best known as Cooley’s Anaemia Foundation, donated $10.000 to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The hospital focuses on developing innovative treatments on terminal children diseases, such as different types of cancer. The hospital is located at the city of Memphis, Tennessee.
The AHEPA delegation visited the hospital’s premises. AHEPA and Fund Presidents George Lukas and Ike Gulas respectively, stressed their commitment to sustained medical research. The Fund’s President Mr. Gulas claimed in his opening statement that ‘we sincerely thank Aleen Sirgany and Ashley Trotter from the hospital who organized our visit there. AHEPA is proud to support this great research undertaking to find the cure and treatment of Mediterranean anaemia at the St. Jude’s Hospital. AHEPA will continue to work to provide information on this disease and will not stop until the goal of finding a viable treatment is achieved.’
The recipient of the donation was Dr. Mitchell J. Weiss, Chair of the hospital’s Haematology Department. The donation is primarily intended for covering the operational costs of haematological research, specifically focused on various types of cell-based treatments to eradicate Mediterranean anaemia.
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is among the leading medical institutions in the U.S. studying children types of cancer and other long-term haematological types of illnesses such as Mediterranean anaemia. The hospital’s values are built upon its founder’s vision, philanthropist Mr. Danny Thomas, who back in February 1962, built the hospital to fulfil a personal vow to St. Jude Thaddeus, the saint of hopeless causes. The hospital provided a shelter to children of all ages, ethnic origins, religious predispositions and financial status. Today, the hospital is a globally-acclaimed, model research centre in children medicine, with a track record of several successful treatments against different types of disease.
