Developments in the Western Balkans and the EU accession course of countries in the region dominated the talks between Alternate Foreign Minister George Katrougalos and the High Representative of the EU on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini held on the sidelines of the NATO Ministerial meeting in Brussels on Wednesday.
According to diplomatic sources, the Greek minister referred to statements made by the government in Skopje that were later revoked, reiterating the need to follow the spirit and the letter of the Prespes Agreement. Moreover, the issue of EU’s constructive involvement ahead of the restart of the deliberation on the Cyprus issue was also discussed.
NATO’s relations with the countries of the western Balkans are, among others, on the agenda of today’s Ministerial meeting with the Alliance and, in this context, the FYROM issue will also be put on the table.
During a press conference on Tuesday evening, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the ratification of the Prespes Agreement is a condition for FYROM’s accession to the Alliance.
