EU Summit: Leaders discuss Turkish violations

The EU Summit resumes today with the focus on foreign policy issues. The leaders of the 27 member states will discuss the issue of Turkish violations following the latest developments, despite the fact that it was not on the summit’s agenda.

“Turkey remains consistent in its provocative and aggressive behavior. In this context, the EU must show the same consistency in the implementation of the decisions it has already taken, so that Turkey’s behavior has the appropriate consequences”, stressed yesterday the Greek Prime Minister, as he arrived at the summit.

France is firmly on Greece’s side, with Emmanuel Macron stating that the issue of Turkey is returning to the table “in light of the latest developments”. German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called Ankara’s behavior “unacceptable”. The European leaders are called upon to decide on their next steps.

The ultimatum given to Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s government expires in December, when practical answers must be given.

On Brexit, the 27 member states expressed their concern on Thursday because the progress made is not sufficient in order to reach an agreement.

On climate change, the proposal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 55% by 2030 has been on the table, but it seems the EU still has a long way to go.
