Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, attending the second day of the EU Summit in Brussels, stated that Greece is satisfied with the text of the conclusions.
“The EU has sent a message of unity, solidarity and determination. It made it very clear that refraining from all unilateral actions is a precondition for improving EU-Turkey relations,” he said.
“We look forward to the start of exploratory contacts as soon as the two sides are committed. The refraining from any unilateral action is a precondition for improving EU-Turkey relations”, said the Greek prime minister.
Also, the text of conclusions adopts the firm Greek position that the only issue of the dialogue is the demarcation of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones. In fact, Turkey is called upon to start a dialogue aimed at resolving all maritime disputes with Cyprus.
The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, and the President of the EU Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in a press conference, avoided using the term “sanctions” and spoke about “tools” that are on the table and if necessary, they will be used. The issue, however, will be reconsidered at the December Summit.
In a letter to the Europe’s leadership and institutions, SYRIZA president Alexis Tsipras asks their support for a dynamic policy towards Turkey that will resume under new terms, strong sanctions and a firm and positive agenda, the Euro-Turkish relations.
