Athens denies Stoltenberg’s statement regarding start of Greek-Turkish talks

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter that after talks with the Greek and Turkish leaderships, the two allies had agreed to hold technical talks within the Alliance, in order to set up mechanisms for the de-escalation in the Eastern Mediterranean and the risk reduction of “incidents and accidents”.

However, this statement was refuted by Greek diplomatic sources who state that “the information that has come to light regarding alleged technical talks in NATO does not correspond to reality”.

The same sources add that the NATO Secretary General’s intention to establish mechanisms in order to reduce the tension has been taken into consideration, but de-escalation can only happen with the immediate removal of all Turkish ships from the Greek mainland.
