GRECA: Ecommerce market in Greece will contribute €4 billion revenues in 2019

The Greek eCommerce Association (GRECA) published a survey for ecommerce activities in the Greek online market. Estimations about the ecommerce activity in Greece are expected to surpass the €4 billion threshold by the end of 2019. This represents an 8% increase to the €3.7 billion revenues reaped in 2018.

Ecommerce progressively becomes a daily custom in Greece with 85% of internet users being regular shoppers from online stores. In 2016 the same number did not exceed 65% of internet users. The most characteristic age groups resorting to ecommerce are age spans from 16 to 74. The survey sample indicated that the percentage of users falling in this huge age category of people was only a meagre 27% back 2012 who have used ecommerce platforms once in their lifetime. This score has now been elevated to over 40% of internet users.

Further, the survey results revealed that 85% of online shoppers make at most of their purchases from domestic online stores. However debit and credit cards have not become the preferred payment option. The most renowned payment method in Greece appears to be cash on delivery. Cash on delivery has been extensively used in e-commerce interactions accounting roughly for the 54% of online payments.

These statistics came at a press conference held in the aftermath of the Ecommerce Week hosted under the auspices of GRECA and the General Secretariat for Commerce and Consumer Protection. The Ecommerce Week lasted from 4 until 11 March. This is the sixth consecutive year where the pilot programme takes place and aims to introduce Greek customers to the ecommerce world. More than 7.000 business entities in Greece have established digital shops to accommodate the market needs of 3.8 million online users.

The GRECA association operates on three founding principles. Above all the association seeks to cultivate a culture of cooperation between domestic e-sellers and construct a well-coordinated e-market. Secondly GRECA provides sustained education solutions to e-vendors and online customers on a concurrent basis. For example, periodic seminars take place that examine in-depth the safety and security of buyer-seller interactions in the internet space. Finally, the association has established a framework of best practices in the e-market and initiated e-vendor certification schemes to assess and improve the quality of ecommerce shops.
