Foreign Minister George Katrougalos: Syria crisis needs a political solution

“The only solution to the Syria crisis is a political solution via the Geneva process under the auspices of the UN, with respect for UN Security Council Resolution 2254, international law and human rights,” Greek Foreign Minister George Katrougalos said on Thursday, in his intervention at the 3rd Conference on supporting the future of Syria held in Brussels.

Katrougalos said that special importance should be given to Syria’s unity, national sovereignty and territorial integrity, which can better guarantee the adoption of a new Constitution for all the citizens of the country.

Referring to the refugees, he underlined that “the management of the Syrian crisis constitutes a wager for our societies, that we must preserve our values and against the voices of xenophobia that want to turn Europe into a fortress”.

“Greece welcomed thousands of Syrian refugees, offering them access to education and social services and proving that it is an open society”.

In this context, Katrougalos highlighted Greece’s long standing bonds with the region and the Arab world and the role of the Greek communities in the area.

Moreover, he referred to Greece’s active contribution to the region’s prosperity and stability through initiatives such as the Rhodes Conference for security and stability and the Athens Conference for the protection of religious and cultural minorities in the Middle East.

Finally, he announced that Greece will offer 100,000 euros for the Syrian refugees through UN Bureau for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) expressing in parallel the hope the the restructuring of Syria will start soon, clarifying that Greece will be present when this happens.
