More than 3,600 incidents were handled by the Hellenic Coast Guard in 2018, according to a report published Monday. Of the 3,647 incidents, 2,146 related to the management of migration flows. The majority of these incidents were recorded in the Peloponnese region with 879 cases. Second came Western Greece with 469 reported incidents while the island of Lesvos, in eastern Aegean Sea, came third with 457 similar events.
Furthermore, the operational center of the Hellenic Coastguard helped transfer approximately 1,091 patients in 2018. Of them 392 were transported with patrol vessels or life boats, while the remaining 699 occurrences were handled with commercial or private boats. Besides these incidents, the Hellenic Coast Guard also embraced a security mandate. In the field of security, the Hellenic Coast Guard handled more than 273 incidents related to the smuggling of drugs and other illicit networks. Within the context of these incidents, the maritime authorities incriminated 364 individuals.
In overall, the Hellenic Coast Guard received a total of 44,159 incoming calls in 2018. Of them 2,470 were flagged as red alert (including 4 bomb scares), and 523 were misplaced calls.
