Margaritis Schinas: Greek banks are dealing with NPLs as needed

European Commission spokesperson Margaritis Schinas expressed the certainty on Thursday that Greek banks are taking all necessary measures to deal with the issue of the non-performing loans (NPLs), during a press conference in Brussels.

Asked if the Commission will accept an asset protection scheme for banks, Schinas said that the Commission does not comment on individual institutional bodies, adding that the Commission is closely monitoring the develoments in the European banking sector, including the Greek banks.

“Due to the successful recapitalisation programme in 2015, the Greek banks have carried through important restructuring and must now continue to focus on resolving the issue of NPLs. We are certain that the Greek banks are assuming all the necessary measures to deal with this matter, something that will be supported by the reforms carried out by the Greek government,” Schinas concluded.
