A big restrospective of Yiannis Moralis’ work opens at the Benaki Museum

The Benaki Museum, the National Gallery – Alexandros Soutsos Museum, the National Bank of Greece Cultural Foundation and the Zoumboulakis Gallery, present the retrospective exhibition of Greek painter Yiannis Moralis, at the Benaki Museum (138 Pireos street).

The exhibition, which will run through January 5, 2019, aims to present the work of Yiannis Moralis as a whole and to detect his visual universe. Its order is chronological and follows Moralis from the 1930s to the 2000s.

The chronological-biographical flow is “disrupted”, but not disturbed, by several smaller thematic sections, like exhibitions within the exhibition, that are devoted to his work titled Synthesis A, which resulted in the completion of dozens of drawings, drafts and studies on portraits of friends and celebrities, like the composer Manos Hadjidakis and the poets Yiorgos Seferis and Odysseas Elytis.

About 200 paintings, have been gathered from public and private collections, many of which are presented for the first time. The works are complemented by drawings, engravings, book illustrations, ceramic tile compositions, large and small sculptures, costumes and props from theatrical performances, original archives and photographs.

The visitors follow the course of Yiannis Moralis’ life: his years as a talented student at the School of Fine Arts, his relations with his teacher Yiannis Kefallinos and his apprenticeship at the engraving workshop, the continuation of his studies in Rome and Paris, together with his friend Nikos Nikolaou, the difficult years of the Occupation, the initial recognition he received from the public, his participation at the 1958 Biennale of Venice, the illustration of George Seferis’ Poems and the creation of covers for Ikaros publications and finally his close collaborator with the Zoumboulakis Gallery and his mature period of the so-called abstraction-simplification of the figures.

A bilingual (Greek and English) guided tour will soon be available for the visitors.
