Silent vigil for Attica wildfire dead held in Syntagma

Hundreds of people holding lit candles gathered in Syntagma Square in central Athens at 21:00 on Monday night, near the monument of the Unknown Soldier, for a silent vigil in memory of the people killed in the deadly eastern Attica fires on July 23.

Sitting in a circle of silent protest with their candles, they then formed the shape of a heart and the date of the deadly fire, as people continued to flock to the square in response to an open invitation via the social media entitled “An apology from us here to you up high”.

A total of 2,500 people eventually responded to the call made by veteran basketball player Yiannis Gagaloudis, 39, as a way to honour the victims of the deadly wildfires.
