Prespes agreement will benefit both countries, says Zoran Zaev

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Prime Minister Zoran Zaev sent a message of friendship to the Greek people in an interview with public broadcaster ERT on Thursday.

The FYROM leader highlighted that by the spring of 2019, or the middle of 2019, he expects to see only benefits from the Prespes agreement.

“We are your northern neighbor. We clearly have a separate identity. We are changing our constitution because we believe in this friendship,” he said, adding that he is confident the deal will bring prosperity to the people of both countries.

“We are not a part of the Hellenistic history of Macedonia,” he said, adding that his country accepts the Hellenistic Macedonian identity and recognises this.

Talking about the Prespes agreement, he stated that he was proud of it and that it was not an easy deal to make, highlighting that with the agreement there are attempts create a friendship, a positive future and the ability to work on every level.

“We are two neighboring nations and I believe that we have large possibilities ahead of us from which the people will see will bring only positive results,” he said.

Zaev expressed his confidence that the referendum his country will hold will be successful, and that vote may take place at the end of September.
