Centeno and Moscovici pay tribute to Greek people for sacrifices

Eurogroup President Mario Centeno and EU Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs Pierre Moscovici paid tribute to the Greek people on Wednesday for the sacrifices they made in order for economic stability to return to the country.

“First and foremost, I would like to pay tribute to the Greek people. The positive results of the last program are to their credit. These should now have a lasting effect on growth and this would not have been possible without the extraordinary sacrifices made by Greek citizens,” Centeno told European Parliament.

“Greece’s third program is drawing to a successful close. The Greek people are finally able to turn the page,” he added.

Centeno said that the Eurogroup gave time and money to Greece and that eurozone countries lent Greece 250 billion euros when no one else would.

On his behalf, Moscovici said that this is a very important moment for Greece.

“Greece has found the path to normality. Greece has come out of the crisis a lot stronger,” he told European Parliament.

“The past years have been very trying for Greece and the Greek people and for the most vulnerable members of Greek society. There are many Greek citizens suffering from these reforms or austerity. I have every admiration for the Greek people. They have shown their will to remain in the eurozone. And I would like to pay tribute to the courage shown by the Greek people over these past few years,” he said.
