Dimitris Tzanakopoulos: Agreement on FYROM name issue opens up new chapter of cooperation

The agreement on the FYROM name issue opens up a new chapter of political cooperation, economic cooperation, solidarity and friendship in the Balkans and ends an entire cycle of nationalist outbursts, which is the primary political gain from this agreement,” government spokesman Dimitris Tzanakopoulos said on Monday in an interview.

“The chapter of the nationalist outbreaks at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century is definitively closing with this agreement, which now determines the modus vivendi between the two countries and the two peoples,” he underlined.

Responding to a question about fears of irredentism, the government spokesman spoke of a “tremendous fear,” which was mainly cultivated by circles of the Greek right and after describing it as “utter nonsense” he noted: “With this agreement, our neighbour state accepts that any suspicion of irredentism must be eliminated from its Constitution and recognises that there is no Macedonian minority in Greece, which is achieved for the first time.”
