A deputy Supreme Court (Areios Pagos) prosecutor ordered an investigation on Friday on whether far-right Golden Dawn deputy Constantinos Barbaroussis has committed high treason following inflammatory comments he made in Parliament.
Deputy Supreme Court Prosecutor Evangelos Zacharis ordered an investigation into the crime of high treason, which does not require parliamentary approval for prosecution.
Speaking in Parliament during the debate on the censure motion over the FYROM name agreement on Friday, Barbaroussis called on the military to arrest the president, prime minister and defence minister of the country “for treason”, accusing them of “not legislating in the interests of the country.”
The MP’s comments caused an uproar and resulted in his party’s expelling him from its parliamentary group, and in the parliament president’s decision to disqualify all Golden Dawn deputies from taking the floor in Parliament.
Earlier, Supreme Court Supreme Court Prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou had ordered an investigation of the MP, while the defense and alternate defense ministers filed a lawsuit against him at the Supreme Court.
