Greek President Prokopios Pavlopoulos expressed the full support of the Greek state for the work of the Patriarchate as regards the defence of the principles and values of Orthodoxy, as well as initiatives for the protection of the environment, while welcoming Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew on Monday.
Pavlopoulos underlined that these principles and values, especially those related to humanity, solidarity, peace and justice, are of immense value in our troubled times, while also stressing support for the groundbreaking initiative to protect the environment, undertaken by Patriarch Bartholomew.
The President noted that at a time when environmental protection is becoming a survival issue for mankind, and also a time when some have, unfortunately, failed to realise that the major issue for maintaining balance on the planet is not so much economic growth as a matter of environmental protection, since sustainable economic growth can only be achieved in a sustainable environment.
On his part, Patriarch Bartholomew stressed that the Patriarchate is counting on the support of the Greek people and the political leadership of Greece and referred to the initiatives he has taken to protect the environment. As he pointed out, emphasis is placed on the culture of solidarity, but also on new initiatives and actions concerning the protection of the environment.
