There’s time still to resolve name issue by July says Dimitrov

There is time to resolve the name issue before the end of June, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov said on Friday, in statements following the 3rd Ministerial Meeting of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria and FYROM in Thessaloniki.

Dimitrov, who had met with Greek FM Nikos Kotzias earlier, said that there is a race against time to reach an agreement in time for the European Council and Summit meeting at end-July. (The European Commission has recommended the start of accession talks for FYROM, on condition it resolves the name issue with Greece.)

Dimitrov said that talks with Kotzias had come a long way, and added the only way to have a permanent solution to the name issue is to ensure it is accepted by both countries’ people.

He and Kotzias will continue talks next week, Dimitrov said, following the summit in Sounio, to which they have also invited UN special envoy for the name issue Matthew Nimetz.
