Turkish authorities grant permission for liturgy at Orthodox Church in Cesme

Turkish authorities granted the Ecumenical Patriarchate permission to hold a liturgy at the Agios Charalambos Church in the coastal town of Cesme, across from the island of Chios.

Metropolitan Bartholomew of Smyrna will officiate at the liturgy on February 10, name day of the saint after which the church is named. The Orthodox community of Izmir (Smyrna) will organize the event.

The church is currently used for various activities by the municapility. Following the Asia Minor disaster, it was used as a church again in February 2016.

Cesme (also known once as Krini) used to be the seat of the metropolitan of Krini, with Agios Charalambos as its metropolitan church. Before that it used to be part of the larger metropolis of Ephesus.

Authorities on Chios have arranged for boats to take the faithful to Turkey for the service on the morning of February 10 and bring them back at its end.
