I will not tolerate dividing Greeks to unite the people of FYROM

Many people in New Democracy (ND) claim that Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis, during the party’s Political Committee session on the FYROM name issue, gave his best speech. Before two former PMs, Mr. Kostas Karamanlis and Mr. Antonis Samaras, and every important member of the party, Mr. Kyriakos Mitsotakis put an end to a potential national consensus on the name issue, and harshly criticised the governing partners, Mr. Tsipras and Mr. Kammenos.

Mr Mitsotakis accused the Prime Minister of undermining the process of finding a solution, of showing indifference towards the national interest, and of using the issue for his own political gains. He characterized as “disgraceful” the lack of common stance between SYRIZA-ANEL and once again put the blame on the Prime Minister for failing to inform the opposition parties, the Hellenic Parliament and the Greek citizens.

Mr. Mitsotakis also targeted Mr. Tsakalotos, Mrs. Christodoulopoulou, Mr. Gavroglou, Mr. Karanikas and 200 other members of SYRIZA, who, as he said, now demand explanations from ND, but in 2008 they were signing texts asking to recognise FYROM with the name “Republic of Macedonia”, while the government of Kostas Karamanlis prevented FYROM from acceding to NATO.

By fully supporting the choice of citizens to participate in the Thessaloniki rally, Mr. Mitsotakis distinguished “nationalist” from “patriot” and predicted that “the way events are unfolding, the solution will most likely have to be found in the future, with more preparation beforehand”.

Because there is much talk about what ND would do and what is its position, Mr. Mitsotakis clarified that he would not discuss anything with the neighbouring country, unless they reviewed their Constitution, where there is a reference of a “Macedonian Nation”.

“The issue for us ends here. Under no circumstances, are we going to participate in the dangerous games the government is attempting to play and engage in its plots”.
