Death toll from flooding in Mandra, Attica has reached seven, sources say

Up to seven people have died while more are feared missing in Mandra, Attica following the heavy rain that flooded the west Attica towns of Mandra, Nea Peramos and Megara on Wednesday, sources told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

As emergency services struggled to rescue people trapped in their homes and cars, several people were reported missing, with authorities investigating whether they were flood victims or had taken refuge elsewhere.

“We are doing our best to face the problems. There are more than 160 calls while 60 firemen are operating in these areas,” the spokesperson of the Fire Brigade Stavroula Malliris said earlier on Wednesday in statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA).

A state of emergency has now been declared in all three areas, while Alternate Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas had made his way to there to oversee rescue operations. According to government sources, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has also contacted Toskas on the phone and was briefed about the operations in the area.
