Parliament accepts Article 3 on age limit of gender identity legislation

Article 3 of a draft law on gender identity, which allows individuals to change their legal gender at the age of 15 and above, was passed in parliament in a roll-call vote on Tuesday, with 148 votes in favour out of a total of 285 MPs present.

The draft bill was also passed as a whole, with 171 supporting the bill in principle and 114 voting against.

All the individual articles barring article 3 were passed with the votes of 165 MPs, with 119 voting against and one abstaining. A total of 124 MPs voted against article 3, while 13 abstained.

An amendment concerning the Turkish Union of Thrace was supported by 248 MPs, with 39 voting against.

Ruling coalition leader SYRIZA and the Potami party voted in favour of the bill in principle, as well as the individual articles and the amendment. Main opposition New Democracy opposed the bill in its entirety, except for the amendment. Far-right Golden Dawn, the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) and the Centrists Union voted against the bill in its entirety while the Democratic Alliance voted in favour for everything except article 3, where it abstained.
