The 19th Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will take place from March 3 to March 12, 2017, celebrating the art of documentary with documentaries from all over the world, tributes and several parallel events, with the aim to inform and sensitize the audience about crucial issues.
For the first time this year, the Thessaloniki Documentary Festival will host an International Competition section with first and second films from all over the world, discovering the filmmakers of tomorrow.
The 19th TDF showcases a rich production of Greek documentaries, which are included in the various International Program sections and in the Greek Panorama section.
The main tributes of the 19th TDF honour the work, inter alia, of the uncompromised Ukrainian-born Russian documentary filmmaker Vitaly Mansky, who will attend the event to present his films. In addition, the festival highlights the work of the acclaimed Italian avant-garde filmmakers Yervant Gianikian & Angela Ricci Lucchi, in collaboration with Documenta 14, the world-renowned modern art exhibition. Moreover, a tribute titled “Minorities” will also be presented in this year’s edition, with films that focus on different minority groups.
And of course, the program of the 19th TDF includes the following sections: Human Rights, Memory & History, Habitat, Music, Kaleidoscope, Film Forward with experimental films and Docs for Kids with documentaries for children and adolescents.
This year’s edition will also host two new segments: Cinema, with films about genres and memorable moments of the seventh art, as well as Food vs Food with food-related documentaries that explore the various aspects of the topic.
The Doc Market, an inseparable and invaluable part of the Festival, has become established as a locus where filmmakers from all over the world meet with representatives of TV channels, with a view to promote and sell their films.
