German cabinet approves signing of FYROM NATO Accession Protocol

Germany’s cabinet on Wednesday “approved the signature of the NATO Accession Protocol for the Republic of North Macedonia,” the German government spokesman Steffen Seibert announced, noting that the protocol will be signed by the Alliance’s permanent representatives in February and that it must then be ratified by Germany’s parliament in the form of a law.

“We are convinced that the accession of North Macedonia to NATO will contribute to the security and stability not only of the EuroAtlantic area and will not only strengthen the transatlantic community but also give a significant boost for the further stabilisation of the Western Balkans,” Seibert said, adding that this was “genuinely good news” for Europe and the transatlantic Alliance.

He noted that the accession will come into force when all NATO member-states send notification that they have ratified the accession protocol, adding that the German government will strive to conclude the necessary procedures quickly.
