European Commission agrees with raising minimum wage, labour ministry sources say

The European Commission agrees with plans to increase the minimum wage, provided that the increase is cautious, labour ministry sources said on Wednesday, after the conclusion of a meeting between Labour Minister Effie Achtsioglou and representatives of the institutions in Athens.

According the same sources, the final decision on the precise amount of the increase will be reached next week, when the relevant ministerial decision is to be signed.

During the meeting, Achtsioglou briefed the institutions on the report of the expert committee and the results of a consultation process on the minimum wage and the abolition of the sub-minimum wage. The two sides presented legal and economic arguments relating to the procedure followed and the likely impact that a hike in the basic wage will have on key economic indicators.
