PM Tsipras dons Antetokounmpo shirt on Instagram in show of support against racism
In a message to indicate his support for basketball player Thanassis Antetokounmpo and his family in the wake of a racist attack targeting the player, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras on Thursday posted a photograph of himself on Instagram wearing an Antetokounmpo shirt in the colours of the Greek national team.
“Respect and pride for the people that were born and raised here and that made Greece their own country. No tolerance for racism and hatred,” Tsipras said in a message accompanying his post, in which he tagged all four Antetokounmpo brothers – Thanasis, Giannis, Kostas and Alexandros.
Earlier, NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who plays with the Milwaukee Bucks, had also sent his own message on Twitter over the incident, lashing out at a Greek TV presenter who targeted Thanasis with a racist slur. Giannis Antetokounmpo said he was “sad and disappointed,” while adding that “we will not let the negative comments change this family and our love for the country we grew up in.”
The Antetokounmpo brothers are of Nigerian parentage but were born and grew up in Athens and both have Greek nationality. Thanasis Antetokounmpo is a player with the Greek team Panathinaikos.
