PM Tsipras: Netanyahu’s presence in Varna an opportunity to discuss East Med pipeline
The presence of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the Quadrilateral Summit held in Varna provides an opportunity to discuss the important EastMed pipeline project but also the prospects for stability in the wider region, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Friday, following a meeting with Netanyahu on the sidelines of the summit.
“We discussed the major opportunities that arise through the cooperation of our countries for investment in energy security in the region,” said Tsipras, while also highlighting the importance of the Greece-Bulgaria Gas Interconnector (IGB) pipeline project.
According to Tsipras, the EastMed pipeline was a project “of major geopolitical importance, not only for our countries but for the Eastern Mediterranean generally,” since it will transfer natural gas from the Eastern Mediterranean to Europe but also be able to send it north, via the existing infrastructure in Greece.
The Israeli prime minister attended the Greece-Bulgaria-Romania-Serbia Summit at the invitation of Bulgarian Prime Minister Boyko Borisov.
