Panos Skourletis: The great wager is for people to see their daily lives improve

Reducing inequality in Greece will be the great wager for the government going forward, former minister and newly-elected SYRIZA Central Committee Secretary Panos Skourletis said in an interview released on Sunday.

“We have to make use of the capabilities we have been given in order to reduce inequalities and establish a new growth course for the economy, so that people can see this improvement – or at least the greater part of Greek society – in their day to day lives,” he said.

This would be the point on which the government will finally be judged by the voters, he added.

According to Skourletis, the International Monetary Fund and Greece’s main opposition leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis “both agree on choice of allowing the social nature of the pension system to collapse” while, in another part of the interview, he attacked Movement for Change party leader Fofi Gennimata as “having lost the ground beneath her feet after 2012.”

Presenting SYRIZA’s plan in the local government elections, Skourletis said the party would seek to collaborate on an equal footing with “those forces on which we can agree on specific programmes”.

In other parts of the interview, Skourletis referred to PASOK founder and late prime minister Andreas Papandreou and the role that he played in Greek politics, the refugee issue, the future of Europe and about relations between politics and journalism.

On the agreement negotiated between Greece and FYROM, Skourletis noted that Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader Panos Kammenos would bear “great political responsibility” if he undermined the ruling SYRIZA-ANEL coalition “at the last moment and in the final straight” over his disagreement on this issue.
