Movement for Change party leader Fofi Gennimata paid a visit to the island of Lesvos on Friday, which included a visit to the Moria Reception and Identification Centre for refugees and migrants and meetings with local government officials.
During her visit, Gennimata will be given a tour of the island’s Vrana Museum and speak at an event in a Mytilene hotel at 19:00 on Friday evening.
In statements after her visit to Moria, Gennimata described conditions in the camp as “hellish” and that the situation she encountered there was “tragic”. Referring to the problems faced by both camp residents and inhabitants of the neighbouring village of Moria, she accused the government of “turning the refugee crisis into a humanitarian crisis” and of sacrificing the islands, as well as an inability to manage EU funds.
She also accused Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis of failing to bring up the issue during their talks with European counterparts:
“Our islands are the border and territory of the European Union and cannot be treated as though they are a third country,” she said.
