Greece must remain an important actor in Europe, says Avramopoulos

Greece must now look forward and strive to retain its place at the core of the European family, European Commissioner for Migration Dimitris Avramopoulos said in an interview on Wednesday, following the speech by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in the European Parliament on the future of Europe.

Avramopoulos said that Juncker had “brought everyone face-to-face with their responsibilites for the support, strenghtening and protection of the European venture”.

He asked for the support of the European Commission’s proposals, starting with the revision of the Dublin Treaty and the creation of a safe environment for EU citizens.

Referring to Greece, Avramopoulos said that the Commission had succeeded, “always in cooperation with the Greek authorities, to keep Greece in the eurozone,” adding that “we should be grateful to Europe, to the European leaders and to Jean-Claude Juncker, and continue to look forward and assume our own responsibilites so that Greece remains an important actor in Europe’s core and in the European family.”
