Valdis Dombrovskis: Europe’s future without Greece ‘impossible’ to imagine

It is impossible for someone to imagine Europe’s future without Greece, said European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis in his intervention during the debate with Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in progress on Tuesday at the European Parliament. He also praised the courage shown by Tsipras and his government in their effort to overcome the deadlock with FYROM. “It is an example for all of us,” he said.

Dombrovskis noted that Greece has turned a page, that unemployement has dropped and the recovery has been achieved due to the Greek people’s efforts and sacrifices, adding: “I do not rule out the possibility that the Greek economy will pleasantly surprise us”. On the migration issue, he noted that all the member-states should agree on common solutions in a spirit of solidarity.

The European Commission vice president also posted on his personal twitter account ” Greece plays a vital role in the stability of the Western Balkans. I’d like to pay tribute to the leadership of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and FYROM Prime Minister Zoran Zaev who have acted in a spirit of openness and compromise in the interest of their countries and the whole region.”
