FM Kotzias met UN special envoy on Cyprus Jane Holl Lute on Tuesday

Negotiations on the Cyprus issue under the UN secretary general should begin only after the other side displays a sincere intention to look for resolution, Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Kotzias said after meeting with UN Special Envoy on the Cyprus issue Jane Holl Lute on Tuesday.

Following a meeting in Athens with Holl Lute, who did not make any statements, Kotzias told the press he explained to her that “the main issue for Greek Cypriots is to feel safe on their own island.”

He called for the cancellation of two agreements, the so-called agreement of alliances and the agreement of guarantees, he said.

Whenever the UN secretary general decides to begin talks on the issue again, “a substantive and effective preparation must precede it, in order to determine if there truly is a willingness, ability and opportunity for substantive and productive solutions,” Kotzias noted.
