Government to take political responsibility ‘to the end’, says Fotiou

“The political responsibility we have undertaken we will take to the end at all costs,” Alternate Social Solidarity Minister Theano Fotiou said on Thursday about the disastrous July 23 wildfires, while noting that the demolition of even a perimeter wall carried political cost.

The goal was to prevent the repetition of something like the Mati fire happening again in the future, she noted, adding that Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras had assumed political responsibility for managing the crisis and had called for a full investigation in which those responsible will be held to account.

Fotiou said that in the three years of the present government, a legal framework had been created that delineated the forests and precisely defined coastal and beach areas, while reforestation areas were clearly defined with a digital imaging.
