The demolition of illegal buildings located in forests and on beaches begins

The first demolitions of illegal constructions in forests, coastlines and beaches will begin as it was voted by the Parliament. The provisions were voted in favor by all parties except from the Communist Party which declared “present” in both cases, and the Golden Dawn who voted against the acceleration of the demolition.

In his presentation, Deputy Minister of the Environment Socrates Famellos denounced the fact that several final demolition decisions concerning constructions in Rafina and Nea Makri remained in the drawers of the offices for 20 years.

Regarding the controversial land where 27 people died while trying to escape the sea, Mr. Famellos revealed that it is a forest area that belongs to the state and which was violated, and which was designated to be a service area for beach-goers, where it is forbidden to build houses.

For his part, the Minister of Environment and Energy Yorgos Stathakis pointed out that presently, the decentralized administration of Attica.is in possession of decisions for final demolitions concerning 2,500 properties located in forests and 700 others for constructions that are located on beaches and shores.
