European Commission: “A new chapter is opening for Greece”

The European Commission posted a video on Thursday, as a Eurogroup meeting is deciding on the final program review for Greece, titled “A new chapter is opening for Greece,” and saying “This is the result of both national reforms and support from EU partners.”

The video provides examples of reforms achieved through the sacrifices and efforts of the Greek people, listing among them the following:

– GDP growth rebounded from -9.1 % in 2011 to 1.4% in 2017 and is projected to grow by around 2% in 2018 and 2019.

– While unemployment remains high, it has decreased from 27.9% in July 2013 to 20.1% in March 2018. Over 100,000 jobs have been created since 2015.

– The recovery of public finances has been impressive, with the deficit decreasing from a peak of 15.1% in 2009 to a surplus of 0.8% in 2017.

“The economy is now on the right track,” it said. “However reform efforts should be kept up after the programme ends. To sustain the recovery and ensure the country is prepared to face the future.”
