President of the Republic Prokopios Pavlopoulos on Tuesday met with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Michele Nicoletti.
The two officials underlined the need to support the social state in Europe, as well the need for solidarity in addressing the migration issue.
Pavlopoulos reiterated that, unfortunately, some EU and CoE member-states are not demonstrating the required solidarity with respect to the refugee crisis, while adding that being a European is great honour that also entails certain obligations. He noted that “if they do not meet their obligations in such a major issue of solidarity that proves Europe’s humanism then there are penalties and these penalties should be applied”.
On his part, Nicoletti thanked Pavlopoulos for the meeting and praised Greece’s contribution in the Council of Europe, as well as in the region of the Mediterranean and the many challenges and difficulties it faces, such as issues of migration and the various sources of tension.
Moroever, he expressed the Council’s gratitude for Greece’s solidarity with weaker groups and agreed with Pavlopoulos on the need to support the social state and social rights.
