As if not a single day has gone by…

“It’s a badge of honour to have Mr. Tsipras say such things about me”, said former Prime Minister and former New Democracy President, Mr. Antonis Samaras, in reply to Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras‘ words during his speech at the SYRIZA Central Committee meeting.

Mr. Tsipras, referring to the FYROM name issue, described how the then government of Konstantinos Mitsotakis was toppled by Antonis Samaras, while he was serving in the post of foreign minister: “There is a window of opportunity to finally resolve a problem that has been plaguing the country since 1992. When the government of Konstantinos Mitsotakis and the country, had the misfortune to have Mr. Samaras as Foreign Minister, who preferred to build his own personal career rather than help to resolve the problem in the most beneficial way for the country. Cries and frenzy is typical of those who seek to exploit their country, but only dialogue and sobriety can offer good services.” The Prime Minister gave an interview to a Sunday newspaper along the same lines, even going as far to state that Panos Kammenos will not become … Samaras, and will not cause the fall of the current coalition government of SYRIZA – ANEL.

Three years ago, Antonis Samaras, two and a half years into his own government tenure, faced the insurmountable obstacle of being re-elected, and in the end lost to Alexis Tsipras. In fact, he was overthrown by SYRIZA and Alexis Tsipras personally, who enjoyed a popularity rate that touched 80%, that is almost the entire electorate, whether they had cast a vote for him or not. Samaras, violating the established protocol, never handed over the Prime Minister’s office to newly elected Alexis Tsipras.

Mutual feelings are evidenced by the current Prime Minister. Reading carefully into the speeches of Alexis Tsipras, we can see that his toughest criticism concerns Antonis Samaras and not Kyriakos Mitsotakis

Today, 3 years later, Antonis Samaras is in the spotlight. As if he was…the Prime Minister’s karmic opponent. Within New Democracy, he has a strong presence through Adonis Georgiadis and enjoys the support of a significant number of executives in the party’s mechanism. In all his financial forecasts regarding the SYRIZA government, he has been vindicated, his very own pre-electoral press spokesperson, Mrs. Maria Spyraki, is again the party’s spokesperson and, at the same time, New Democracy in order for to convince its own constituency about its new reform program, rhetoric, and credibility , reminds the achievements of the Antonis Samaras government…

In short, the match is once again between Alexis Tsipas and Antonis Samaras. As if not a single day has gone by.
