Turkey still can’t get it right about the drilling in Cyprus’ EEZ. Turks continue the threats

It’s been a week since drilling started in the EEZ of Cyprus at Block 10 and the Turks continue the threats at every opportunity.
On Thursday, addressing an event on the Turkish oil drilling vessel “Koca Piri Reis” at a University in Smyrna (Izmir), Binali Yildirim, the speaker of Turkey’s Grand National Assembly, warned that Turkey would react if it felt its interests were being jeopardized in the Mediterranean. In what was seen as a direct threat towards Greece and Cyprus, Yildirim claimed that Greece and Cyprus were violating international law and warned oil companies to “be aware of their limitations” and refrain from conducting oil research in the region.
In a strange interpretation of International maritime law, the Turkish politician claimed the sea was a common property and heritage of humanity. “Therefore, exploitation, appropriation by only one country, one community, has nothing to do with national and international law”, he said.
He went on to point out that the interests of “Northern Cyprus” coincided with those of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, threatening that the latter could swiftly intervene if it deemed it necessary.
War trumpets are being blown by the Turks who once again seem to “defend” the not at all flattering title of the destabilization force of the Eastern Mediterranean posing a threat not only to Greece, Cyprus, Israel and Egypt but to the whole world and directly undermining the interests and the energy safety of the West.
Following ExxonMobil’s (in cooperation with Qatar Petroleum) spud of the Delphyne-1 well in the offshore Block 10 in Cyprus using a Stena Drilling drillship, Turkish Foreign Ministry on Sunday said: “Exploration activities of ExxonMobil off the Island of Cyprus within the so-called “block” 10 upon the license given by the Greek Administration of Southern Cyprus do not contribute to the stability of the region. They may also change certain sensitive balances with regard to the resolution of the problem.”
“We seize this opportunity to reiterate our warning towards the companies involved in the unilateral exploration and exploitation activities of the Greek Cypriot Administration. We remind that the sharing of the natural resources of the Cyprus Island is related to the essence of the Cyprus issue,” the ministry said on Sunday.
“As in the past, we will continue to take necessary diplomatic and political steps, in coordination with the TRNC, with a view to protecting the rights and interests of the Turkish Cypriot people, as the equal owners of the Island, stemming from international law. We will start activities in the areas licensed by the Turkish Cypriots to the Turkish Petroleum, in addition to our continental shelf,” the ministry said.
And the threats continued on Thursday through Binali Yildirim.
“This is a breaking point,” Yildirim was quoted by the state-run Anadolu agency during a ceremony in Izmir.
He said oil companies drilling in the region must “mind their steps,” adding that Ankara will respond to any plans that run counter to the interests of the divided island’s Turkish-Cypriot community and Turkey, Anadolu reported.
“Everyone should know that we will not yield even an inch of our rights and interests at sea,” he was quoted as saying.
The Turkish delirium comes after the clear US statement that warned Turkey to “Stay away from Cyprus”.
The drilling off Cyprus started in the presence of the US Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources, Francis Fannon, on Friday 16 November, who was quoted by the New York Times as saying “We’re very excited about developments ongoing in the region and we see great promise” repeating also Washington’s support for Cyprus’ own hydrocarbons search.
