Panathinaikos: Calathes show against Anadolu Efes keeps dreams for EuroLeague’s Playoffs alive

Panathinaikos B.C. secured a vital win with score 88-75 against Anadolu Efes at OAKA court as part of Round 21 of the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague. The win gave a glimmer of hope to Panathinaikos players in their efforts to capture one of the Final-8 positions which would qualify the team to the next round of EuroLeague playoff fixtures. The 29-year old point guard Nick Calathes was astounding on Friday’s game, nearly missing a triple double – that is, achieving a double-digit number in three of the five basket performance indicators, points, assists, rebounds, steals and blocks. Calathes was a leading orchestrator of Panathinaikos’ emphatic win over Anadolu Efes, finishing the game with 20 points, 13 assists and 8 rebounds.

Calathes’ performance against the Turkish contender rose him to the top eight position within EuroLeague’s hall of fame book of great point guards with extraordinary assist numbers. The head coach of Panathinakos, Rick Pitino, lauded Calathes’ performance in post-game flash interview. The Panathinaikos head coach stated that the Greek point guard has surpassed in terms of assist performance several NBA legends he trained throughout his career:

“I have coached against some of the great guards in the game… Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Mo Cheeks, and Isiah ThomasNick Calathes is the best passer I have seen in my lifetime.”
